Article by Amanda Demers
An avid hunter will often enjoy planning his vacations around a hunting trip. Vacation time is definitely a good time to plan a major hunting trip. You’ll be able to take your time hunting and also be able to take in local sights if you like. One major advantage of hunting vacations is that there are a number of good spots to choose from. Regardless of what type of terrain or game you prefer, you’ll be able to find a suitable destination. Stores like Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops carry the supplies that you need for your hunting trip. Here are five destinations to consider if you are an avid hunter:
1. Ashland, Ohio
This area is very popular with whitetail deer hunters. You can choose from hunting at a whitetail ranch or enjoy the experience of a free range. A leading contributor to the number of deer herds is the abundance of the corn and soybean farms in the area. The local terrain includes hilltops surrounded by hardwoods, swamps and ravine springs. These terrain features give you a better chance of getting the deer you’ve been hoping for.
2. Fort St. James, British Columbia, Canada
This hunting area provides great moose and grizzly hunting. You’ll also find deer and black bears in the area. Spring and Fall are both considered to be ideal hunting times in the area. The moose population includes a number of mature males with a large antler span. The grizzly population is large and the black bears are of a large size. Most of the hunting areas are easily accessed through 4-wheel-drive vehicles and boats. Meat, trophy and bow hunts are all popular options.
3. Brighton, Iowa
This area is home to some good whitetail deer hunting, as well as turkey hunting. Many of the deer are of a large size due to easy access to farm crops. You’ll easily find wooded areas that provide you with ideal hunting conditions. The area has a spring turkey season where hunters can shoot turkeys that weight as much as 30 pounds. If you like to hunt using bird dogs, this is a good area to consider since there are a lot of quail and pheasant from fall until late winter.
4. Simpson, Illinois
This area near the Ohio River provides some of the best turkey and deer hunting in the state. Bowhunters are especially drawn to this area due to ideal conditions. Most of the prime hunting spots are located on private-managed properties that allow good opportunities. Due to the farmland, deer often find ideal grazing conditions. In addition to farmland and river bottom sloughs, you’ll find swamps and oak forests.
5. Gardiner, Maine
This forested, rural New England area offers great deer and turkey hunting. Non-hunting companions who enjoy the outdoors will also find some good fishing. The deer season starts in September and runs through the first week of December, allowing you to see good fall foliage. Archery hunts are especially popular in the area. Turkey hunters can enjoy their season here during May and June. Most of the spots on guided hunts are on private land.
